What is a Payment Processor?
A payment processor is a company that handles transactions so your donors can make donations online. That means the payment processing company communicates and relays information from your customer’s credit or debit card to both your bank and your donor’s bank.
If there are enough funds on your donor’s card and it is valid, the transaction will go through. And all of this happens in a matter of seconds. Stripe provides the technical, fraud prevention, and banking infrastructure necessary to operate secure online payment systems.

What is Stripe?
Donorbox uses Stripe as its main payment processor. Stripe allows you to get paid with all major credit/debit cards from customers around the world on the web or in mobile apps. It was launched for the public in 2011 and since then, they have processed over a trillion dollars for global businesses and nonprofits.

Over 80,000 organizations from 96 countries around the world use Donorbox to fundraise online. People love Donorbox because it’s easy to get started with accepting donations.
While Donorbox offers both PayPal and Stripe as payment processors, we recommend Stripe for more flexibility and innovative payment options.
Is Stripe Safe?
Yes. Stripe exceeds the most stringent security standards:
SSL Protected: All transactions are SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protected. Your information and your donor’s information are securely transmitted during the processing of all payments.
PCI Compliant: Stripe is a PCI Service Provider Level 1 which is the highest grade of payment processing security. You can rest assured that your donor’s information is safe and secure.
Encrypted: All credit card numbers are encrypted and safely stored in Stripe’s state-of-the-art data center. This ensures both the security and integrity of your donor’s information.
Fraud detection with machine learning: Stripe’s radar fraud-detection system is smarter when it comes to blocking fraud and allowing legitimate donors. Not only that, it adapts quickly to shifting patterns of fraud and your nonprofit safety needs.
Donorbox also offers industry-leading security, making your fundraising even more secure – from start to finish.
What are Some of Stripe’s Other Advantages?
1. Donors can use any credit/debit cards
Users in the United States can use any of these credit/debit cards to make their online donations:
Visa
Mastercard
American Express
Discover
JCB
Diners Club
2. A range of payment methods
Stripe also supports a range of additional payment methods, including:
3D Secure
Low-cost ACH bank transfers (U.S. organizations)
Apple Pay
Google Pay
3. Unbelievable uptime
Imagine an uptime of 99.99%! That’s what Stripe offers you as a payment processor. It means you’ll always be ready to accept and process donations from your supporters – 365 days a year and 24/7. Less downtime means happier donors!
4. Automatic updates for saved cards
When your donors’ saved card expires or they receive a new card for some other reason, Stripe automatically attempts to update the saved card information. Most card issuers in the U.S. support this feature and provide updated card information. Thus, Stripe can automatically update most American Express, Visa, Master Card, and Discover cards in the U.S.
5. Not just safe but ultra-safe
We’ve already talked about Stripe’s radar fraud-detection system. But that is not all; it offers an additional layer of authentication that protects you against fraudulent card payments. It lowers the risk of chargebacks with a feature called dynamic 3D secure, applicable to high-risk transactions. So the next time you’re expecting a big donation or a major gift, you know Stripe has got you covered.
Where Does the Money Go?
When you receive a donation, the funds are sent to your Stripe account. Payouts are then made to the bank account that you have linked to Stripe. This payment will be processed by Stripe, but as far as the donor knows they’re paying you directly.
How does the payout happen?
You can set a payout schedule on your Stripe dashboard. By default, your payout schedule will be daily. But you can change it to weekly, monthly, or manually. Note that this gives you control over when your raised funds are paid out, not when they will be available, which is controlled by payout speed that varies by country.
Stripe supports one-to-two-day bank payouts in the U.S. and an average wait time of a week for international organizations.
How Do Donorbox and Stripe Work Together?
As part of the Donorbox set-up process, you will be prompted to select a payment processor and when you select Stripe, you will then be prompted to enter all the information you need to register an account with them. Donorbox handles both account setups to make it as easy as possible for you.
When you finish the setup you will have both a Donorbox account and a separate Stripe account. Funds donated are automatically transferred to your designated bank account by Stripe.
Donorbox has already helped nonprofits across the globe raise $2 billion in online donations.
