Mailchimp is one of the first email marketing companies that comes to mind, but is it the right choice for your organization?

While Mailchimp offers a free package and some helpful features, other companies provide the same and more. In this article, I’ll share where Mailchimp falls short and 10 other alternatives to consider for your nonprofit.

Why Your Nonprofit Should Consider Mailchimp Alternatives

As of February 17, 2026, Mailchimp has made changes to its Free package, which restricts the number of available email contacts and monthly sends.

The Free Plan now includes a maximum of 250 contacts that can be added to your CRM system and up to 500 monthly email sends – significantly reducing your email marketing efforts.

Mailchimp’s Free plan also excludes the following essential email marketing features:

  • A/B testing.
  • Email scheduling.
  • Automated workflows.
  • Email segmentation.

Even their Essentials package, which starts at $12 a month, offers limited email marketing and segmentation capabilities.

Nonprofits using Mailchimp have found the limits to email designs, social media connections, workflows, and segmenting donors restrictive to the success of their emails.

If you’re looking for something different (and better), here are 10 free or affordable choices that may align better with your needs.

10 Free or Affordable Mailchimp Alternatives for Nonprofits

1. Donorbox Email Marketing

Screenshot shows Donorbox CRM's new Email Marketing (Beta) feature.

Donorbox’s Email Marketing feature (beta) is a mass communications platform designed to help nonprofits send highly targeted, engaging email and drip campaigns to increase engagement and donations.

Features that stand out

  • Integrated with Donorbox CRM so all your data lives in one place.
  • Precise segmentation to target your messaging and reach the right supporters.
  • Drag-and-drop editor that makes it easy to customize your email templates to match your branding.
  • Schedule emails to stay on top of your outreach and reach supporters at the right moment.
  • Detailed metrics like open and click rates to evaluate the success of your campaign.
  • Automated workflows triggered by predefined conditions to connect with donors at the right time.

Drawbacks:

  • Email Marketing is still in beta, so you’ll need to wait to access it via Donorbox CRM.

Why choose Donorbox Email Marketing over Mailchimp?

This is ideal for busy fundraisers who prefer to have all their tools in one place.

It’s also designed to be user-friendly and does not require technical know-how to create attractive, engaging email campaigns. Plus, the segmentation feature makes it easy to target your emails to any existing groups you’ve created, meaning you only have to do the segmentation work once.

  • Subscription forms.
  • Email and automation reporting.

Pricing

Why choose ActiveCampaign over Mailchimp?

The platform also enables you to create personalized emails based on donors’ responses, use social media in your emails, and integrate with hundreds of third-party platforms.

For example, integrate Donorbox with ActiveCampaign to send your donor, donation, and campaign data to this email marketing platform. This streamlines your email marketing, saving hours of manual effort.

This integration is done via Zapier, which also lets you connect to 5000+ other useful apps from Donorbox.
