Ready to part ways with Pushpay and move on to something better?

In this article, I’ll walk you through how to cancel your Pushpay account and share why it might be worth moving to a more robust fundraising platform like Donorbox.

Why Cancel Pushpay?

While Pushpay does offer convenient online giving tools for supporters, it may fall short in several areas depending on your church’s needs and budget. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Long-term contracts

Pushpay requires nonprofits to commit to an annual contract ranging from 1-3 years in duration. If circumstances change, organizations are still responsible for the remaining balance and may face challenges when trying to get out of the contract early.

Pushpay reviews like this one highlight the issue:

The long-term contracts are restrictive and don’t offer the flexibility needed if your circumstances change or if you’re dissatisfied with the service.” – Verified User in Public Safety

We CANNOT get out of our contract!…Save money and headache and go with another company!” – Anthony M

2. No crowdfunding or peer-to-peer functionality

Although Pushpay supports online church giving and supporter management, it doesn’t include built-in crowdfunding or peer-to-peer fundraising features, which are key for increasing donations and expanding your reach.

3. Costly for users

Pushpay does not publicly list its pricing. However, reviews suggest that, between base subscription costs and additional fees, it can become a significant investment.

Processing charges and fees are the highest in the arena.” – Joshua S

PushPay is extraordinarily expensive…Rolls Royce Prices for Nissan Quality.” – Daniel E

4. Limited payment options

The platform offers a limited range of payment methods for supporters – direct bank transfer, cards, and only one digital wallet option.

Bonus resource: Read this blog to learn why offering more donation methods decreases donor drop-off.

Step 1: Export Important Information

First and foremost, be sure to export all your important information – once your account has been closed, you’ll no longer have access to your Pushpay portal. This includes data like your transaction history and previous giving statements.

Here’s a list of data you may want to export. You can also access additional built-in reports by navigating to Reports & Metrics > System Reports.

Transactions

Log in to your Pushpay account and go to the Finance tab, then select the Transactions page.

From there, apply any filters you’d like, and once you’re ready, click the Export button in the top right corner.

Keep in mind that this export will include transactions that are still processing.

Giving statements

Log in to your Pushpay account and go to the Reports & Metrics page. From there, select System Reports, then open the Financial tab.

Under Statements and Pledges, click Giving Statements.

You’ll receive an email with a link to open a PDF of the statements. Be sure to download and save the PDF to your computer, as the email link will no longer be active once your account is closed.

Recurring giving

Log in to your Pushpay account and go to Recurring, then select the Overview page.

From there, use the filter options as needed, and once you’re finished, click the Export button to download your data.

Pushpay also provides a Data Export service for $150. If you’re interested in using this option, submit a support ticket to schedule your export.

Step 2: Review Important Account Closure Details

Here are some important things to know before closing your Pushpay account:

  • Closing your Pushpay account will not stop or change any payments that have already been successfully submitted.
  • Closing your Pushpay account will stop any recurring or scheduled future payments that were active at the time the account is closed.
  • Once your Pushpay account is closed, your saved payment methods will be removed, and any active recurring gifts will be canceled.
  • After closing your account, it cannot be reopened.

Step 3: Request Cancellation

To close your Pushpay account, you need to send an email to letting them know you’d like to close your account.

Be sure to include the following information in your email:

  • First and last name
  • Email associated with your account
  • Phone number associated with your account
