We’re elated to announce that Donorbox donation forms now accept iDEAL payments! Your donors from the Netherlands can now make easy, one-time donations in Euros through bank transfers, instead of using credit cards or PayPal
iDEAL is the Netherlands’ most popular online payment method. It provides a secure way to easily process your donors’ bank payments, using their online banking portal to complete the transaction. iDEAL is user-friendly and offers much lower fees than traditional card payments.
When completing an iDEAL payment, your donor is directed to their bank’s online banking portal to authorize the transfer from their account to your Stripe account. This gives them a sense of familiarity and security. The risk of fraud or unrecognized payments is extremely low with iDEAL because the donor must authenticate the payment themselves.
iDEAL is available via Stripe, our most popular payment processor and needs to be activated in Stripe’s payment settings. iDEAL payments can only be processed for Euros, so ensure that your donation form has ‘Euros’ available as a currency option.
As long as your donors have a bank account with one of the major banks in the Netherlands, they will be able to make an iDEAL donation. iDEAL payments are accepted in the US and many European countries. Stripe’s fees for each country may differ:

By default, iDEAL payments are not enabled on Donorbox forms. To enable it, follow these easy steps.
Before you can accept iDEAL payments, you must first activate iDEAL in your Stripe account. In your Stripe payment settings, click the “Activate” button next to “iDEAL payment”. You might be required to fill in additional forms, but this is not always the case.
Log into your Donorbox account settings, and click on “Payment Methods” on the left. On the Payment Methods page, you will see the “Accept iDEAL Payments” toggle option.
Read through the criteria information on the screen. Then, click the toggle so that it is On.
Once enabled, the “iDEAL” payment option will now appear in the direct debit tab of your donation form’s payment page. The donor must be donating from a Netherlands bank account.
Your donor needs to select their bank from the drop-down menu and sign into their online banking system. Their bank will guide them through other security steps to authorize the donation.
Once this is done, the funds will be transferred from their account to your Stripe account.
Please note that iDEAL is a synchronous payment method meaning there would not be a delay in confirmation of payment. If you need to issue a refund, you can do so from your Stripe or Donorbox dashboards within 180 days of the donation.
