Surf Cerrito aims to use surfing as a tool for mental and physical development amongst disadvantaged children in the community of Cerrito de la Virgen.
Cerrito de la virgen is a small, underdeveloped town on the outskirts of Huanchaco, Peru. Huanchaco is a World Surf Reserve home to some of them best waves in the world, however almost all children from Cerrito cannot swim nor have the resources to surf despite living 15 minutes from the sea. The project was born from the desire of Brayan Hilario, a local surf instructor born in Cerrito, to help his town by sharing the mental and physical benefits he has reaped from surfing with the local children. I, Daisy Hill-Norton, helped Brayan to start the project and to also share my love of the sea with the kids I had been working with as part of the NGO Otra Cosa Network.
Over the last three months, with the help of volunteers from Otra Cosa Network and donations from friends and family, we have been running weekly classes and have witnessed an incredibly positive effect on the children’s physical and mental well-being and some serious progress on their surfing skills! The time the kids spend in the water has already boosted their self-confidence, given them essential time away from issues at home as well as helped to form a strong, connected family they know they are safe in.
We are now taking the project to another level, and building a Surf Academy in the heart of Cerrito de la Virgen. This will be an essential space to be able to continue running the weekly lessons, as well as providing the children of Cerrito with a safe space to develop their confidence and be part of a secure family of surfers.
So far, thanks to the incredible generosity of family and friends, we have raised a massive £1,000, which has paid for 3 months of weekly Surf Cerrito lessons, as well as the boards to be able to make it happen.
The construction of the Surf Academy will cost £2,450. To achieve this sum, we would like to create a ‘Founder Group’. The Founder Group is an exclusive group of donors who will receive personalised updates on Surf Cerrito and the build as well as the opportunity to be part of an informal advisory board which will help shape the future of the project. We are looking for 10 individuals/companies that would like to support the continuation of our project with a donation of £250+, which will secure the funding for the entire construction of the Surf Academy and therefore the sustainability of the project.
Will are also of course welcoming other donations of money or kit to ensure the continuation of the project. The monthly cost of running the project is £94, and the following bits of kit are invaluable to us:
- Fins (thanks to the rocks!)
- Wax
- Wetsuits (kids aged 5-15)
- Wetsuit boots (kids and adults)
- Boards
- Floatation devices

Surf Cerrito tiene como objetivo utilizar el surf como una herramienta para el desarrollo mental y físico de los niños desfavorecidos de la comunidad de Cerrito de la Virgen.
Cerrito de la Virgen es un pequeño pueblo subdesarrollado en las afueras de Huanchaco, Perú. Huanchaco es una Reserva Mundial de Surf, hogar de algunas de las mejores olas del mundo, sin embargo casi todos los niños de Cerrito no pueden nadar ni tienen los recursos para surfear a pesar de vivir a 15 minutos del mar.
El proyecto nació del deseo de Brayan Hilario, un instructor de surf nacido en Cerrito, de ayudar a su pueblo compartiendo los beneficios mentales y físicos que ha recibido del surf con los niños locales. Yo, Daisy Hill-Norton, ayudé a Brayan a comenzar el proyecto y también a compartir mi amor por el mar con los niños con los que había estado trabajando como parte de la ONG Otra Cosa Network.
Durante los últimos tres meses, con la ayuda de voluntarios de Otra Cosa Network y donaciones de amigos y familiares, hemos estado impartiendo clases semanales y hemos sido testigos de un efecto increíblemente positivo en el bienestar físico y mental de los niños y un progreso increíble en sus habilidades de surf. El tiempo que los niños pasan en el agua ya ha aumentado su confianza en sí mismos, les ha dado tiempo esencial lejos de los problemas en el hogar y les ha ayudado a formar una familia fuerte y conectada en la que saben que están seguros.
Ahora estamos llevando el proyecto a otro nivel, y construyendo una Academia de Surf en el corazón de Cerrito de la Virgen. Este será un espacio imprescindible para poder seguir impartiendo las clases semanales, así como proporcionar a los niños de Cerrito un espacio seguro para desarrollar su confianza y formar parte de una familia segura de surfistas.
Hasta ahora, hemos recaudado £1,000, que ha pagado siete tablas, así como los costos continuos necesarios para ejecutar las lecciones desde noviembre.
