[in English]: Good day everyone. With a heavy heart I tell you all that our friend our teacher, and our leader, Nanzin Anastacia passed away today on Wednesday May 1st, 2024. She will always be in our hearts and on our minds and tongues when we speak in Nawat. Any contributions made to this campaign will now go directly to her family to cover any outstanding medical bills, funeral costs and their general wellbeing as they grieve their mother & grandmother.

My name is ayuzin (formerly known as turtle or manny) and I am a student of Nanzin Anastacia López López. Myself, along with the help of other students are organizing a short-term, sustainable fund to support Nanzin Anastacia who is in urgent need of medical care. For the next three months (May, June, July) I will personally be accepting donations on Nanzin Anastacia’s behalf and directly sending those donations to her weekly.
I hope you will consider supporting our efforts via a one-time or monthly donation and/or by widely sharing this campaign with y/our communities. Padiux (thank you) to all the Nahuablantes who graciously share their knowledge with those of us in the Salvadoran diaspora.

I am a trans-mihkwaniyulu person who in 2022, successfully embarked on a journey to become a licensed barber with the emotional, spiritual and material support of my communities and ancestors. I have always wanted to show how easy it can be to support ourselves and others.
That year, as I began my new life as a barber, another life-altering thing happened; I learned about Nawat classes for trans people (and allies), beginning in the Fall. The classes were taught online by Nanzin Anastacia Lopez Lopez, a disabled Nahuablante (native Nawat speaker) from Wizapan (Santo Domingo de Guzmán, ELS), community organizer, vocalist, and the current International Chief of ANIS (National Association of Indigenous Salvadorans).
It was in my first class that I was gifted the name, ayuzin (the Nawat word for turtle). Hearing our mother-tongue for the first time was an evolution of self, the feeling of coming home. I learned that Nanzin Anastacia was only one of about 50 Nahuablantes left, most of whom live in Wizapan. It turned out that I was now part of a generations-long effort by the elders to return us to our language. By October of 2023, I knew how to say “Niyulcuga ipanpa ne migitilis Palestinaçaneh.” (I am sad for the genocide of the Palestinian people.)
Earlier this month, just a week before her 62nd birthday, amidst climate chaos, an ongoing pandemic, and US-funded wars against Black & native people across the globe, Nanzin Anastacia became gravely ill. Since then, her long-term diabetes diagnosis in combination with a lack of affordable healthcare in her hamlet, continues to debilitate her bodymind.
With the nearest hospital being a 1-2 hour drive away, Nanzin Anastacia can only afford in-home care, where a nurse is currently tending to her needs. As of the creation of this campaign Nanzin Anastacia is unable to physically talk and her family is struggling to keep up with the daily costs, averaging at about $90 a day.
Nanzin Anastacia’s income is primarily funded by student donations and emergency fundraisers. Years after my own fundraising experiments in 2022, I am now being tasked to pay it forward. My desire is to give to her what she has given to me and so many other students across Turtle Island. I hope that you will also feel called to join me in this small effort to support our elders in living a life beyond survival.

Mi nombre es ayuzin (conocido como turtle o manny) y soy estudiante de Nanzin Anastacia López López. Junto con la ayuda de otros estudiantes, estamos organizando un fondo sostenible a corto plazo para apoyar a Nanzin Anastacia, quien necesita atención médica urgente. Durante los próximos tres meses (mayo, junio, julio). Estaré aceptando donaciones en nombre de Nanzin Anastacia y enviándole directamente a ella cada semana.

Soy una persona trans-mihkwaniyulu que en 2022, emprendí mi trayecto para convertirme en barberx con el apoyo emocional, espiritual y material de mis comunidades y ancestros. Siempre he querido mostrar lo fácil que puede ser apoyarnos entre nosotrx mismxs y a lxs demás.
Ese año, al comenzar mi nueva vida como barberx, ocurrió otra cosa que cambió mi vida; me enteré de clases de Nawat para personas trans (y aliadas), que comenzaban en el otoño. Las clases eran impartidas en línea por Nanzin Anastacia López López, una Nahuablante (hablante nativa de Nawat) discapacitada de Wizapan (Santo Domingo de Guzmán, ELS), organizadora comunitaria, vocalista y actual Jefa Internacional de ANIS (Asociación Nacional de Salvadoreños Indígenas).
Fue en mi primera clase que me regalaron el nombre, ayuzin (la palabra Nawat para tortuga). Escuchar nuestra lengua materna por primera vez fue una evolución personal, la sensación de volver a casa. Aprendí que Nanzin Anastacia era solo una de alrededor de 50 Nahuablantes restantes, la mayoría de los cuales viven en Wizapan. Resultó que ahora formaba parte de un esfuerzo de por vida para apoyar la revitalización del Nawat. Para octubre de 2023, yo sabía cómo decir “Niyulcuga ipanpa ne migitilis Palestinaçaneh.” (estoy triste por el genocidio de la gente Palestina.)
A principios de este mes, justo una semana antes de su 62 cumpleaños, en medio del caos climático, una pandemia en curso y guerras financiadas por Estados Unidos contra personas negras y nativas en todo el mundo, Nanzin Anastacia enfermó gravemente. Desde entonces, su diagnóstico de diabetes a largo plazo en combinación con la falta de atención médica asequible en su aldea, sigue debilitando su cuerpo y mente.
Con el hospital más cercano a 1-2 horas en automóvil, Nanzin Anastacia solo puede permitirse la atención en el hogar, donde actualmente una enfermera está atendiendo sus necesidades. A la fecha de la creación de esta campaña, Nanzin Anastacia no puede hablar físicamente y su familia está luchando por mantenerse al día con los costos diarios, que rondan los $90 al día.
Los ingresos de Nanzin Anastacia son principalmente financiados por donaciones de estudiantes y campañas de recaudación de fondos de emergencia. Años después de mis propios experimentos de recaudación de fondos en 2022, ahora se me ha encomendado devolver el favor. Mi deseo es darle a ella lo que ella me ha dado a mí y a tantos otros estudiantes en Turtle Island. Espero que también sientan el llamado a unirse a mí en este pequeño esfuerzo para apoyar a nuestros mayores a vivir una vida más allá de la supervivencia.
