Join Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly’s Make an Old Friend For Life Campaign and make a difference in the life of an elderly New Yorker!

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a national network of nonprofit organizations committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly. We offer to people of goodwill the opportunity to join older adults in friendship and celebration of life.

Through our Make an Old Friend for Life campaign, you can provide isolated elders with in-person friendly visits, weekly phone calls, Birthday celebrations, advocacy, referrals and Thanksgiving meals. Your participation will ensure the elderly New Yorkers we serve continue to be remembered, heard and loved.

New York City Expansion Site History

In 2016, LBFE expanded into New York City, offering friendly visiting programs to elderly New Yorkers who had limited mobility and little social support. All programs are offered free of charge for the elderly recipients' lifetime. Since we started, our caring volunteers have conducted over 5,000 home visits and 10,000 phone calls to homebound elders ranging in age from 61 to 111.

Mission

LBFE's mission of relieving elder isolation is made possible by a caring community of volunteers who wish to develop a meaningful bond of friendship with those we serve. Our motto, "flowers before bread, expresses our belief that in addition to basic life necessities, everyone has a strong need for love, beauty, dignity, and the social interactions that make life worth living.

The Perils of Social Isolation

Social isolation has been especially prevalent in the past few years. Most elders we serve live alone, have limited mobility, and receive little or no family support. Imagine being all alone, trapped within your four walls during the most difficult season of your life!

Recently, the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy talked about the public health crisis caused by our nation's loneliness epidemic and how meaningful social connections can have a healing effect. He stated, "Lacking connection can increase the risk of premature death to levels comparable to smoking daily. Social connection is as fundamental to our mental and physical health as food, water and sleep."

More than ever, now is the time to invest in building social connections with those who need it the most.
