Did you know there are an estimated 100 million stray cats and 15 million stray dogs living on the streets in Egypt?
Across Egypt, many animals are abandoned and left to survive in harsh conditions. Alone on the streets, they are forced to fight for their lives each day, searching for food, safety, and shelter. Many suffer from untreated wounds, disease, and infection. Others are born into the same cycle–with no access to care, protection, and no escape from the suffering they endure.
The worst part is that they are seen as a problem rather than victims of a system they didn’t choose–treated as pests which need to be removed. In 2017 alone, over 17,000 stray dogs were killed following concerns around rabies and public safety. This is more than just a statistic–it represents innocent lives lost as a result of a system that failed them, and people who turned a blind eye.
But it doesn't have to be this way...
Recently, our veterinary team at Worldwide Vets travelled to Egypt to work alongside local veterinarians, providing urgent care to animals who would otherwise go without treatment. Whether in our Cairo clinic, or on the streets, our team faced challenging conditions and long, emotional days. But we stayed with those that needed us, treating injured and sick animals, and offering relief where there was none.
This mission was not just about emergency care–it was about preventing future suffering. Through sterilisation, vaccination, and parasite treatment, we worked to break the cycle–reducing overpopulation, preventing disease, and improving long-term welfare for animals and communities.
Because real change doesn’t just treat suffering, it stops it before it begins.
During this two week mission, we performed 278 procedures.
Each procedure represents much more than a goal met–it's a life changed, an animal treated, pain relieved, and a second chance given. We treated 78 animals, providing vaccinations, parasite treatment, microchipping, and sterilisation.
This work would not be possible without the support of our partners on the ground in Egypt, including the SPCA and dedicated local veterinary teams. Their knowledge, compassion, and commitment allow us to reach animals who would otherwise go without care.
Over the next two weeks, we’re sharing the impact of this mission and raising funds to continue this vital work–bringing Hope for Egypt’s Street Animals.
There are still more lives to save...
Street animals in Egypt need more than one mission–they need ongoing, sustainable care, treatment and protection. They need loving people that they can depend on for their survival. But more than anything, they need hope.
Your support can help us to continue:
- Treating injured and sick animals–freeing them from a life of pain
- Vaccinating animals at risk of deadly diseases–preventing diseases like Rabies
- Sterilising stray cats and dogs–breaking the cycle by controlling the number of pregnancies
- Delivering preventative treatment–improving quality of life against life threatening parasites
With your help, we can continue this work, and reach those in need before it’s too late.
Thank you for standing with us.
Your support is helping to change lives, bringing care, relief and hope to animals who need it most.
