Life is putting Georgina to the test

Dear friends and supporters,

After the plan to reach South Africa failed, Georgina had no other option than to return to Thailand. She is now there again on a short tourist visa of three months, safe for the moment, but still without long-term security.

In Thailand, we’ve restarted the efforts to arrange her long-awaited gender-affirming surgery. This procedure is not only vital for her well-being and dignity, but it also increases her chances of obtaining asylum in a safe country. It will also resolve ongoing medical complications that cause her daily pain.

We now need €600 / $650 to start the medical procedure, and an estimated €4,000 in total to complete it.

Meanwhile, Georgina still depends on monthly support for her basic needs as long as she remains in exile.

If you wish to help:

  • 🩵 Monthly support for living expenses: https://donorbox.org/help-georgina-an-intersex-refugee-from-egypt-survive

  • 💙 Support her gender-affirming surgery: https://www.gofundme.com/manage/let-georgina-become-the-woman-who-she-is-and-be-free

Every contribution, no matter the size, directly helps Georgina move one step closer to safety, stability, and a life where she can live freely as herself.

Thank you for standing with her, your help truly makes a difference.

Georgina’s Situation Becomes More Urgent—Thank You for Being Part of Her Lifeline

Dear friends and supporters,

A month ago, we shared that Georgina had to leave Thailand when her visa expired, and that she was able to move to Vietnam thanks to your support. Vietnam might be a welcoming place for Western tourists—but for an Egyptian intersex refugee, it offers little protection.

Her health continues to deteriorate. While she receives HIV medication, hormone injections are extremely expensive in Vietnam. Worse, Vietnam is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention and has no functional UNHCR office. That means Georgina has no legal route to safety there—no asylum process, no protection, and no long-term solution.

At the end of this week, her tourist visa will expire. She must leave again.

Right now, we are working on two options:

  1. South Africa – Her visa application is under review. If accepted, it could offer a major breakthrough. South Africa is a signatory to the Refugee Convention and has legal structures in place to support people like Georgina. But it’s uncertain.

  2. Return to Thailand – If South Africa is not an option, she’ll return to Thailand and continue working with UNHCR there. But this comes with high costs, new visa hurdles, and the risk of more instability.

We cannot thank you enough for your continued support. Your recurring donations help cover Georgina’s basic monthly needs—food, housing, and medication. One-time donations are vital too: they help cover travel costs, visa fees, and one day, we hope, the operation that would allow her to change her passport and finally break free from the threat of being sent back to Egypt.

What we have been able to do for Georgina thanks to your support

(Duthc Version underneath)

Thanks to your support, Georgina was not deported. Unfortunately, the funds raised so far were not enough to cover her gender-confirming operation. When her tourist visa expired, she had to move again—this time to Vietnam. There, she can stay for a maximum of two months, but like in previous countries, she cannot apply for asylum because Vietnam is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention.

Without the operation, Georgina’s situation remains uncertain: she continues to move from country to country while waiting for resettlement through the UNHCR. Her health is unstable due to HIV and hormonal imbalance, and the risk of being sent back to Egypt remains life-threatening.

We now hope to form a stable group of supporters willing to contribute €5 or €10 per month to cover her basic living costs. A one-time donation also helps us reach the $4,000 needed for her operation. Every contribution makes a difference.

Thank you and update from georgina

Dear Sponsor of Georgina,

You may have seen the updates on our socials—or maybe not. Georgina arrived in a new place a few weeks ago. After her flight to Jordan fell through, we worked with her to secure a visa and a flight to another country, where she is now staying on a tourist visa. She is currently working with UNHCR to find permanent residency, but that process takes time.

Soon, her tourist visa will expire, and we are hoping to get it extended. For that, she will need to show proof of sufficient funding to stay. Until then, she depends on support for rent, food, and medication.

One possible solution is relocation through UNHCR to a welcoming country. Another path would be a gender-affirming surgery, which would allow her to officially change her gender marker on her passport. This would free her from persecution by the Egyptian army and enable her to seek permanent residency in the country she is in now.

Here is a personal message from Georgina.

We don’t know exactly how long it will take to secure her final destination—it could be weeks, or it could be months. In the meantime, we are building a support group of 50 people who can donate $10 to $20 per month until she is safe.

If you are already a regular sponsor, Georgina and the Freethinkers community are deeply grateful for your support. Another way to help is by sharing her story on social media. We are active on:

  • Twitter  (X)
  • Linkedin
  • Facebook
  • Threads
  • Instagram
  • Telegram
  • and TikTok

If you have donated once before and have the means to help again, your continued support would mean the world to Georgina.

Together, we can save lives—people who are too often abandoned by their families, their communities, and their countries.

Thank you for standing with Georgina.
