Where Creativity Begins
For many young people, creativity begins with something simple:
• 🎨 A love for drawing and visual art
• 🎵 A passion for music
• 🎬 A fascination with film
• ✍️ A talent for writing
• 🎭 The excitement of performing on stage
These passions can become much more than hobbies, they can become the foundation for a lifelong career.
CHALLENGING THE TRADITIONAL IDEA OF A “REAL CAREER”
As students grow older, they are often encouraged to view creative interests as hobbies rather than possible professions.
The Patricia A. LaPorte Scholarship for the Creative Arts was created to challenge that idea and remind young creatives that:
Their talents have value, and their creative ambitions are worth pursuing.
HONORING PATRICIA A. LAPORTE
The scholarship honors the memory and spirit of Patricia A. LaPorte, whose belief in creativity and encouragement of the arts helped inspire the program.
Her influence was especially meaningful in supporting her son, Ed Kulzer, throughout his own creative journey. His career would go on to include work in children’s television, including Sesame Street, as well as recognition through Emmy Awards.
His journey reflects an important truth at the heart of the scholarship:
Creative ambitions can become real careers.
SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CREATIVES
Today, the Patricia A. LaPorte Scholarship seeks to encourage and support students pursuing creative fields, including:
• Art
• Music
• Writing
• Theater
• Film
• Design
• Other forms of artistic expression
The goal is to help young people develop their talents and take meaningful steps toward their creative futures.
MORE THAN FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
The program is about more than providing financial support.
It is about belief.
Believing that a student’s imagination has potential.
Believing that creative work deserves to be taken seriously.
Believing that young artists should have the opportunity to develop their talents without being told they need to choose a “more practical” dream.
PREPARING FOR A CREATIVE FUTURE
The creative world is constantly evolving. There are careers today that previous generations could never have imagined and there will be opportunities tomorrow that today’s students haven’t even discovered yet.
The Patricia A. LaPorte Scholarship exists to help young creatives take their first steps toward that future.
A Message to Young Creatives
A creative life is not a fantasy.
It can be a profession, a craft, and a future.
And sometimes, all a young person needs is someone willing to believe in that possibility. ✨
