Hello friends,
As many of you know, this August marks the 30th anniversary of the victorious campaign ending the Warner Creek Fire Salvage Timber Sale in the Willamette National Forest, near Oakridge, Oregon. Five years of struggle culminated in an eleven month long nonviolent direct action that became the longest continuous blockade of a timber sale in U.S. history.
Some of you were there, some of you supported from afar, some of you were not even born yet. Whether you were there or not, we want to celebrate with you!
As part of a series of commemorative events, we are planning a celebration and educational event in late August to tie past to present and to leverage the story of Warner Creek for continued forest and climate activism. We envision an event that includes music, film screenings, a panel discussion focusing on lessons learned, a gallery exhibit with archival materials from the time, and more. To help make these events possible and keep this important history alive, we are asking for your support.
We are at a moment of intersecting crises of democracy and ecology, where stories from the past can offer inspiration to help us think outside of the box as we grapple with the issues of the current day. This is an important opportunity for us to share with the wider community why burned forests are ecologically valuable, and how we can safely and sustainably live with fires in our forests and keep it out of our communities.
