CHALLENGES IN GUARANDA
40% of the rural population surrounding the town of Guaranda, Ecuador lives in poverty. Due to the lack of employment, education, infrastructure and healthcare, the area has high rates of issues such as child malnutrition (46%), teenage pregnancy (26%) & illiteracy (10%).
90% of the rural communities are indigenous, but their culture and language is under threat, as many young people abandon their culture and leave for the cities in search of a better life.
WHAT WE'RE DOING
At El Terreno, we're building a centre of cultural exchange and social innovation, where we bring together local Ecuadorians and others from around the world through sustainable tourism, culture, education and ecology – to create a more meaningful, sustainable and prosperous world.
As of the 18th July 2022 we've received over 85 volunteers from all around the world who have impacted hundreds of lives by running over 100 community workshops and events, including art, cooking, English, community cafés, language exchanges and more!
We are also developing further initiatives in the community and have already installed 2 smokeless stoves, to prevent the inhalation of fumes while cooking which causes serious health problems for local people.
WE NEED YOUR HELP
Volunteers contribute 8 hours a week towards delivering community activities cover their own expenses. However, in order to deliver our programmes we need the support of people like you to cover the costs of the materials necessary to deliver the activities for the community. Here's how far your money could go:
$10 - Materials for One Workshop
$30 - Ingredients/Materials for a Cooking Workshop or Event
$100 - Materials for all Workshops for a Month
$200 - Material Costs for a Smokeless Stove
DONATE NOW
