Upstate Water Contamination Project

WICC's Upstate Water Contamination Project is working to eradicate emerging water security crises across New York State.

Just outside of Troy, the town of Poestenkill has been grappling with contaminated water supplies since PFAS were found at Algonquin Middle School in 2021. UWCP has been working on the ground with Poestenkillians on diligent reporting, resident education, and issue advocacy to address the threat to drinking water in the rural Upstate town. In the Adirondacks, road salt contamination has plagued water supplies across the Park. Salt applied to icy roads in the winter flows into water, contaminating private wells belonging to ADK residents. UWCP has been conducting surveying across the Park in four target areas to understand resident attitudes and knowledge around road salt contamination of their water resources. Once surveying is completed, UWCP will be providing sodium and/or chloride testing supplies to ADK residents to ensure that all New Yorkers know what's in their drinking water and how to keep themselves safe.
