On 25 April, at our Trafalgar Square “Scrap Digital ID” rally, Together and NO2ID launched a new joint initiative: The Pledge against Digital ID.
The idea behind The Pledge is simple - but serious.
Not just opposition in principle. Not just awareness. But a clear personal commitment:
"I will not comply."
At the rally, we held a live public signing of The Pledge in front of the crowd, before distributing printed copies for people to take away, read and discuss for themselves.
Many people signed there and then.
That moment mattered because The Pledge is intended to be something more deliberate than clicking a button or adding a name to a list. It is designed as a clear personal decision about how someone intends to respond to Digital ID and “government by app”.
This approach is not new.
During the successful campaign against Tony Blair’s original ID cards, NO2ID combined public campaigning with a similar pledge of non-cooperation. That earlier pledge was downloaded over one million times.
Today, millions of people still instinctively understand the dangers of Digital ID systems - from surveillance and data-sharing to exclusion, tracking and dependency on app-based systems.
But implementation ultimately depends not only on what people think, but on what people are prepared to do in practice.
That is why The Pledge matters.
Since launch, people have already begun sharing The Pledge publicly and discussing it in their own communities. Over the coming weeks, we want to help take it further - through printing, outreach, events, local distribution and public engagement across the country.
