Meet Made, an Indonesian woman from Nusa Penida, Indonesia. Made is 38 years old and is a trailblazer in her community. While most Balinese women of her age have a family and are usually in charge of their household and child care, Made has decided to take advantage of the tourism development in the area and to build a career in scuba diving.

While a lot of Indonesians work in the scuba diving industry, only a handful are women. It is still seen as a profession that is suited to males. Less than 10% of active PADI instructors in Indonesia are Indonesian females.

In 2022, Made met Daniel, an Indonesian scuba instructor working on Nusa Penida. Daniel saw her potential and her determination, and decided to help her achieve her goal.

Made didn’t even know how to swim and so the road was long and arduous to become a Divemaster. But she did it, thanks to her hard work and motivation.
Since 2023, Made has been working as a Divemaster in Nusa Penida, leading certified diver to immerse in the beauty of the underwater realm of her hometown.

We want to help Made achieve her next goal: to become a scuba instructor. By which, she will be able to teach local people to dive and inspire local females to follow her pathway in the diving industry.

While Made’s determination is a sure indicator that she will succeed in this endeavour, the costs involved in doing so are an obstacle. So we have decided to help Made achieve her next milestone. We hope this will provide a better future for her, but also inspire other local women to do the same and embrace a career in scuba diving.
