Rocky’s mom’s son contacted Prince George’s Pet Unity Project on social media on Monday, Oct 27th at 10:39am. By noon, community support team member Erika was in contact with the mom. Medical Coordinator Jacki was troubleshooting what sounded like severe respiratory distress.
The owners were unable to fund any vet expenses and were extremely understandably upset because their dog was declining before their eyes. The possibility of a foreign body seemed really high, which would be an expensive surgery and one he was not guaranteed to survive based on the descriptions of his condition.
Through sheer force of will, our team got Rocky and his guardians into the vehicle with the promise that PG PUP would fund at minimum an exam for Rocky and provide some care to keep him comfortable as that’s all our organization could afford.
Unfortunately Rocky passed on the way to the vet, less than 6 hours after we found out about his condition. We were too late to be effective and too limited in our meager funding. But the incredible effort by the volunteers on this team was so momentous - that we wanted to honor Rocky’s life by creating a fund in his name so that supporters can donate and ensure that resources would be available for other families needing emergency medical care.
The Rocky fund will be established in order to assist in times of greatest need, when other funding options are not available, when time is limited and a life is on the line. We hope to be able to do even more in the future through this fund, with the knowledge and incredible empathy of this team, I know it is possible.
