Donate here to support the next chapter of Christopher Alexander's Fort Mason Bench.
In 1984, Christopher Alexander led the creation of an iconic masonry bench on Fort Mason Center, an embodiment of his ideas of structure unfolding in place. The bench, a gift to Fort Mason and the City of San Francisco, was co-created in a workshop funded by Stewart Brand's Uncommon Courtesy.
Today, the bench is in disrepair, and we’re raising funds to restore it. Alexander’s Center for Environmental Structure and Fort Mason Center are collaborating to raise $25,000 for professional restoration. The restoration effort will activate University of San Francisco Architecture students to design the bench’s next chapter in collaboration with the Center for Environmental Structure.
Donations here also help us make the work of Christopher Alexander and the Center for Environmental Structure available worldwide on digital platform christopher-alexander-ces-archive.org. We appreciate your support for the ongoing development of this website to provide access for all those who wish to build and repair living environments in which people thrive.
