As I stood at the grocery checkout, watching the total climb past $100 for just a few items, I couldn’t help but wonder—how are the families we serve managing these rising costs? The hard truth is, they aren’t.
At Heartland Hope Mission, we’ve seen a 134% increase in the number of families turning to us for help since 2021. While overall inflation is around 20%, some grocery staples have skyrocketed by more than 50%. For working families already living paycheck-to-paycheck, this means tough choices—sometimes between feeding their children or paying for an unexpected car repair or medical bill. These families are at risk of spiraling into deeper crisis, and that’s where we step in.
I am sure you can relate to my trip to the grocery store. It seems like my grocery bill has doubled in the last few years because many of the household staples have had the largest cost increases. For families that are struggling, these cost increases make purchasing the additional food for a holiday meal unfeasible.
