One of the key roles that mushrooms/ fungi play is supporting the decomposition of organic matter, while keeping it moving through the carbon cycle. This makes mushrooms/fungi important in helping us tackle challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss and food security.
As indicated by the United Nations
Africa is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, with rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events affecting various regions, impacting ecosystems and livelihoods, increasing water scarcity and contributing to desertification.
There is reduced crop yields, that have affected livelihoods of many who depend on agriculture. Adaptation strategies are crucial for building resilience in the agricultural sector.
Indoor mushroom cultivation requires a limited amount of water that can even be reused as compared to other crops. This contributes to Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in dry areas while decreasing average rainfall leads to more frequent and more prolonged dry spells.
Mushroom growing improves food security because mushrooms are cheap and easy to grow. They usually grow rapidly and harvesting can start within a few weeks.
Through the provision of income and improved nutrition, successful cultivation and trade in mushrooms can strengthen livelihood assets, which not only reduce vulnerability to shocks, but enhance an individual's or a community's capacity to act upon other economic opportunities.

In 2020, we encountered a challenge of poor mushroom spawn quality and we embarked on learning how to make good quality mushroom spawn
In 2021 we established a mushroom growing and training center with a mushroom laboratory where we produce good quality spawn and mushroom blocks given to women to grow for income
From 2020 to date, we have taught 25,670 women and given out over 20,000 mushroom blocks
After women acquiring the skill of mushroom growing, they will start growing mushrooms for income. We would like to have 500 women supported with 40 mushroom blocks to start commercial mushroom growing and bulky mushrooms for continuous mushroom supply
