Research consistently shows that children who witness or experience domestic violence are at an elevated risk of ongoing harm if they continue contact with an abusive parent after separation or divorce. However, we hear stories every day where these children are given unsupervised contact with the perpetrating parents as arguments in the courtrooms continue over credibility claims and “best interests of the child.”
What is expected to be short-term proceedings can become lengthy ongoing legal battles, bringing unexpected complications, significant costs, and ongoing stress for these families.
These situations take a tremendous toll. Family court proceedings are adversarial by nature, but protective parents often suffer from complex trauma, lose their jobs, and remain bound to substantial legal expenses, custody evaluations, and potential additional fees as more complications pile on throughout their case. Without prompt payment, victims face additional fines and threats of incarceration. Many recent studies have shown that by trying to protect their children, these parents are often faced with the devastating threat of losing them.
In the middle of these trials, we encourage victims to continue serving their communities, find leadership opportunities where they're given a voice, and hold onto their faith.
Scripture reminds us to care for one another in times of need:
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 5:10
“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair.” 2 Corinthians 4:8
These are not stories of defeat but testimonies in progress.
