An update on how GSN is financially supported and our publishing pace

Hi there,

I wanted to share an update with everyone who follows Gay Sydney News – both our regular readers and those who have been providing financial contributions.

Over the past few weeks, you may have noticed fewer posts as I have taken a step back to reassess what a sustainable publishing rhythm looks like.

After some reflection, I have decided to end ongoing recurring reader contributions. This means I will be removing the option for monthly support and cancelling all existing recurring contribution plans.

You can still make a one-off contribution at any time – particularly if a story resonates with you or feels valuable to the community.

This does not mean GSN is closing. We will continue publishing, but at a slower, more sustainable pace – and without the pressure that comes with maintaining monthly reader commitments.

I am making this change to reduce the demands of daily publishing, restore a healthier balance between GSN and my personal and professional life (I also have a day job), and in response to the fact that GSN began accepting advertising last year. With that shift, regular donations are still appreciated, but they are no longer as essential as they once were.

To those who have been monthly supporters: your contributions have genuinely helped keep Gay Sydney News going through some demanding periods, and I am deeply grateful. At the time of writing, monthly support totals $182.63 – a significant portion of which has gone to reporter Eliot Hastie, who has since launched Gay Sydney Daily, and towards the many expenses that come with running a publication, including legal fees.

For anyone who wants to stay up to date with daily LGBTQIA+ news, I strongly encourage you to follow Gay Sydney Daily.

Thank you all for reading, supporting, and being part of this journey. Your encouragement has meant a great deal.

Regards,

Editor

Ben Grubb

  • Nearly 1 million Aussies are apparently LGBTI+
  • Pride in Protest secures more Mardi Gras influence with new board seat
  • Palms introduces cover charge, donates 50% of profits to ACON
  • Newtown’s Hub Theatre to become queer performance space after $25m sale
  • ‘This victory means everything to me’: Victoria Mami wins Slay 2 Stay drag comp

Your support has also been instrumental in covering expenses such as:

  • Ubers to and from the Mardi Gras AGM
  • Two Freedom of Information requests for upcoming stories
  • Monthly Canva invoices
  • Monthly Google Workspace invoices
  • Monthly Xero accounting software invoices
  • Monthly and yearly website costs
  • Monthly Descript video editing software invoices
  • Annual subscription to the Captions app for video editing and captions
  • Monthly Instagram subscription for a verified profile and multiple links

Every bit helps, and your support means we can continue to provide you with quality journalism that defends the marginalised, celebrates our vibrant community, and holds those in power to account.

As always, you can continue to show your support by making a one-time or monthly contribution.

Thank you.
