Mil Mundos en Común (MMeC) is a volunteer-run 501(3)(c) nonprofit working to provide access to essential goods, literacy, and digital connectivity in Bushwick, Brooklyn since 2021.
En Común was created as a container for work happening at Mil Mundos Books during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to have a conversation with our community at large about autonomy, sustainability and collective accountability, people coming to that conversation need to have their basic needs met first — otherwise, they are essentially being asked to multiple by zero. En Común is dedicated to collaborating with volunteers, community organizations and members to help empower an autonomous community within Bushwick and beyond.
Literacy
We collaborate with schools, educators, and community advocates in our neighborhood to empower our communities and facilitate a sustainable support network between schools, institutions, and third spaces. Some of our programming includes:
- Class Trips to Mil Mundos Books
- Books to Rikers Island
- Free Books for the Community
- Beginner English Classes
Digital Connectivity
Digital literacy starts with Bushwick residents having reliable internet access and instructions on accessing local resources online. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased societal dependence on the internet for employment, education, and more. Our team has been leading internet installs with NYC Mesh, including Spanish translation support, since Spring 2021. Mil Mundos en Común provides the support needed for community members to build digital literacy and autonomy.
Essential Goods
We believe everyone in our community should be afforded access to products needed for everyday life: toiletries, diapers, kitchen supplies and more. En Común sources, organizes, and distributes essential products for households in Bushwick requesting assistance in coalition with Bushwick Ayuda Mutua.
Since April 2020, En Común has helped facilitate direct donations of essential goods to thousands of families in coalition with Bushwick Ayuda Mutua. Many families without cooking appliances or even ample clothing for the household have found support in their citas for support at Mil Mundos.
