For over 50 years, the Festival Park Stage has stood as a cornerstone of Junction City’s cultural life, a gathering place where dancers twirl, voices rise in song, and generations come together to celebrate tradition, creativity, and connection. Located in the heart of downtown, this beloved venue has hosted everything from the world-renowned Junction City Scandinavian Festival. The venue holds folk dance classes and youth cultural camps, and local events.
But time has taken its toll. Built in the early 1970s, the stage now requires more than just a fresh coat of paint; it needs a structural rebirth. The Scandinavian Cultural Foundation (SCF) is embarking on a vital mission to revitalize this landmark, transforming it into a safe, year-round home for our community's spirit.
Working with the visionary teams at Rowell Brokaw Architects and Stability Engineering, we have designed a space that honors our roots while looking toward the future. The new stage will maintain its familiar footprint, but the aging plywood will be replaced by a durable steel-framed system and engineered concrete foundations.
To honor our heritage, the structure will feature Scandinavian-inspired architectural details, warm wood-wrapped columns and cladding, ensuring the stage feels like a natural part of our downtown landscape while providing the modern reliability our performers deserve.
To ensure we never miss a beat, or a Scandinavian Festival we are breathing life into this project in two distinct chapters:
Chapter I: Strengthening the Foundation (August 2026 – July 2027)
The story of our new stage begins beneath the surface. In our first phase, we will carefully remove the existing stage to make way for a new, code-compliant concrete foundation. This isn't just about stability; it’s about accessibility. We are rebuilding the ADA ramps to ensure every member of our community can take center stage. We will also upgrade the electrical "nervous system" of the venue and reconstruct the iconic stage backdrop, preserving the look we all know and love while preparing it for the next half-century.
Chapter II: Under the Shelter of Community (September 2027 – July 2028)
The most transformative moment of our story arrives in the second phase: the installation of the permanent open-air cover. This steel-framed metal roof will finally end the days of rain-shortened rehearsals and limited summer windows. With integrated lighting and final electrical systems in place, the stage will transition from a seasonal platform to a year-round venue. We will finish by nurturing the land itself—restoring the lawn, updating irrigation, and planting new trees to ensure Festival Park remains a lush, shaded sanctuary for all.
A Legacy for Every Season
A fully rebuilt, weather-protected stage changes everything. It means our youth dance groups can practice in the spring air without fear of a drizzle. It means local groups like Function 4 Junction and our nonprofit partners have a reliable, safe home for their events. This is more than a renovation; it’s a renewal of community spirit. By investing in this project, you’re helping preserve cultural heritage, support youth education, and build a stronger, more connected Junction City.
The project is a 3–5 year journey, but with your generosity, we can move faster. Join us in bringing the Festival Park Stage back to life. Let’s build a legacy together.
