Ready, set, write

I’m about to start my residency at the Pine Needles cabin, where I’ll spend two weeks working on my book: writing, researching, and mapping, a stone’s throw from the St. Croix.

It’s one of my favorite places in the world. It's also a big opportunity to make progress on my manuscript. (I‘ll be back for another two weeks in October.)

I have visited Pine Needles several times over the past decade but I have never had the chance to work there before now. It’s a privilege and honor, as only four other people have the chance to stay there this summer. I have high expectations for the opportunity to root myself in a special place and to focus on the book.

I will be posting updates on St. Croix 360 about my stay at Pine Needles, sharing observations from this time in close contact with the river, and reflecting on my writing and research process.

This is all possible thanks to the support of the St. Croix Watershed Research Station at the Science Museum of Minnesota — and the 51 people who have donated to the book fundraising campaign so far.

Thank you!

How we got here

Feb. 2020:

  • Met with Kristian Tvedten with the University of Minnesota Press for the first time regarding a potential St. Croix River book.

March 2020 - May 2024:

  • Developed in-depth proposal for the book, conducted extensive preliminary research.

Feb. 2025:

  • Signed contract with University of Minnesota Press to write a book based on my proposal.
  • Began meeting with Diane Wilson, an enrolled tribal member, St. Croix Valley resident, and Minnesota Book Award-winning author. As part of a reciprocal relationship, she has offered her perspective and support in improving the book's inclusion of Indigenous stories in return for my input on her latest project.

March 2025:

  • Applied for a Minnesota State Arts Board grant, which I would receive in 2026 if I'm accepted. Fingers crossed.
  • Applied for an Artist at Pine Needles Residency through the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, which would provide time at the riverside cabin to write, as well as a stipend.
  • Interviewed Chief Dan Mosay of the St. Croix Tribe of Chippewa, toured his hometown of Balsam Lake to learn some of its many Indigenous stories. Agreed to continue talking.

April 2025:

  • Accepted into Pine Needles residency! I'll spend two weeks there in late July/early August, and two weeks in early October.
  • Spent three days writing and researching based out of Osprey Wilds Environmental Learning Center in Sandstone.
  • Offered artist residency at Osprey Wilds during book project, which will add up to nearly two weeks of time to work at a cabin on the property.

May 2025:

  • Did first three-night residency at Osprey Wilds, toured the property with executive director Bryan Wood, got a lot of writing done.
