Smooches the Rescue Pig: The Hormonal Hero Who Saved 88 Pigs
Meet Smooches, the pig who saved his entire family of 88 pigs—not by being a hero, but by being irresistibly charming. In a twist of fate, Smooches’ hormone-driven quest for love ended up leading to the rescue of all the pigs living in deplorable conditions at a hoarding site, thanks to his unlikely bond with a responding police officer.
It all started at a property that had been the subject of complaints for years. Smooches and his 87 family members were living in horrendous conditions—mud-filled pens, no dry shelter, limited food and water, and some pigs with absolutely no shelter at all. It was a heartbreaking situation, and the authorities had finally been called to step in.
Sheriff Kilgore was one of the first responders after an Eviction notice was served and deputies alerted him to how bad the situation was. He arrived at the scene with his team, prepared to take action. But what Sheriff Kilgore didn’t expect was to encounter the pig who would change everything.
Smooches, ever the opportunist, had noticed the sheriff from a distance. And, driven by hormones and an innate desire to find a mate, he decided that this tall, bipedal figure might be the perfect match. Without hesitation, Smooches waddled up to Sheriff Kilgore, sniffed his boots, and nudged him in a manner that could only be described as affectionate (or, perhaps, flirtatious).
While the sheriff was initially taken aback, it didn’t take long for him to be charmed. Smooches was friendly, unafraid, and practically demanding attention. In the midst of such a grim situation, the sheriff couldn’t help but be amused, and maybe a little bit won over by the pig’s sheer enthusiasm.
But while Smooches was focused on finding love, Sheriff Kilgore was focused on a different, more pressing issue: What would happen to these pigs?
The idea of them being put down—due to the overwhelming nature of the hoarding case—was too much to bear. And when Smooches, in his own unique way, created a connection with him, the sheriff couldn’t shake the feeling that these animals deserved more.
The sheriff knew something had to be done. He was able to connect with Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary, explaining the dire situation and asking if there was any way to save the pigs. The sanctuary agreed to step in immediately.
Within hours, a volunteer arrived at the property, and Smooches and the most urgent pigs were safely transported to Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary. Arrangements were made and volunteers were coordinated to relocate the remaining 83 pigs just three days later to Outsiders.
Thanks to Smooches' innocent flirtation, he and his entire family were given a chance at a better life, away from the grim conditions they had endured for far too long.
Now, almost five years later, Smooches and his family are thriving at the sanctuary. They have everything they need—plenty of food, proper shelter, and medical care—and they are free to roam and live as pigs should. Smooches, ever the social pig, is the unofficial mascot of the Upson pigs, greeting visitors with snorts of approval and charming everyone he meets. His hormonal drive may have started the chain of events, but it was his personality that won hearts and changed lives.
Smooches may have been looking for a hot date, but he ended up being the hero who saved his entire family.
