Revitalize the Gateway to Silverton

Help us put Silverton on the Map, one sign at a time!

Silverton’s entryway signs have welcomed visitors for over 30 years, but they are now showing significant signs of wear. It’s time to revitalize our town’s entrance, reflect our community pride, and create a beautiful, inviting gateway that celebrates what Silverton has to offer, year-round. This project has been over a decade in the making, and with your support, we are now ready to bring this long-envisioned improvement to life. We’re now raising the funds needed to implement the new design and make this long-envisioned improvement a reality.

Our town entryway signs are located right off Highway 550 as you come into town—SIGN A stands directly across from the Whistlestop Gas Station, and SIGN B faces northwest, welcoming visitors coming from Ouray & Red Mtn Pass.

Design Mockup for Phase 1

The design mock-up represents Phase 1 of the New Entryway Signage Project. With support from SJDA's Main Street Mini Grant, local designer Kat Ochabova incorporated elements from the 2017 Town Wayfinding Master Plan and the Community Master Plan, aligning the new design with existing community features such as our trash receptacles and flower planters.

Once initial funding is secured and the main signage is installed, SJDA will move into Phase 2, which includes adding seasonal auxiliary signage and incorporating landscaping around the sign area. The auxiliary signage will highlight Silverton’s year-round services, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Silverton Mountain, local events, and other key community organizations. All additional funding donated will be used towards Phase 2 implementation.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on this project. We truly value our community’s feedback and engagement. This mockup has now passed final review, and SJDA will be moving forward with the design. We’re excited to continue working together to enhance the entrance to our town!

This campaign is led by Silverton’s economic development organization, San Juan Development Association, and the Silverton Main Street Program. We’re proud to be collaborating with local designers and makers on the final signage, using partial funding from our Main Street Mini Grant to ensure the new signs reflect Silverton’s unique character. A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors: Platinum Sponsors- San Juan County, Silverton Sponsor- Coffee Bear, Bronze Sponsors- SMPA and Quiet Bear Art.
