Hey Prairie Protectors!
Welcome to Seed the Meter, a groundbreaking fundraising campaign where every dollar you donate funds 10 years of restoration for 1 square meter of South Dakota prairie at Karol's Prairie. Join us in revitalizing this vital ecosystem and supporting the surrounding farms for a greener, healthier future!
Why Restore the Prairie? π±
Karol's Prairie is more than just land; it's a crucial part of our ecosystem. Prairie restoration offers numerous benefits:
Biodiversity Boost: Restoring the prairie brings back native plants and wildlife, creating a thriving ecosystem.
Carbon Sequestration: Prairies act as natural carbon sinks, helping combat climate change by trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Water Quality Improvement: Healthy prairies contribute to cleaner water by preventing soil erosion and filtering pollutants.
Supporting Agriculture: Surrounding farms benefit from the restored prairie, as it enhances soil health, reduces pests, and provides a natural habitat for pollinators.
How it Works: πΏ
For every dollar you donate, you'll be adopting 1 square meter of prairie at Karol's Prairie, funding its restoration for the next 10 years.
Your contribution will directly support the restoration efforts, including planting native species, controlling invasive species, and restoring natural habitats.

Let's Restore Karol's Prairie, One Square Meter at a Time! πΎπ±
Here are some ways we are restoring the prairie:
Removal of Invasive Species: Invasive plants can crowd out native species, so removing them is often the first step in prairie restoration. We do this through manual removal, herbicide application, or a combination of both.
Seeding: Seeding native grasses, wildflowers, and other plants is crucial for restoring the plant diversity of a prairie. We do this through through broadcast seeding or more targeted methods, depending on the size and condition of the site.
Prescribed Burns: Controlled burns mimic the natural fires that once shaped prairie ecosystems. They help control invasive species, promote the growth of native plants, and recycle nutrients back into the soil.
Grazing: Controlled grazing by livestock or native herbivores can help manage vegetation and mimic the natural grazing patterns that shaped prairie ecosystems.
Mechanical Vegetation Management: This can include mowing or cutting vegetation to control growth and encourage the growth of desired species.
Soil Preparation: In some cases, soil may need to be prepared before seeding to ensure the best conditions for plant growth. This can include activities like tilling or adding organic matter.
Monitoring and Adaptive Management: Monitoring the progress of restoration efforts is crucial to ensure they are effective. We track plant growth, species diversity, and soil health, and adjusting management strategies as needed.
