Unimaginable Loss  
The Heartbreaking Story of Jorge's Family

In Venezuela, due to the country's situation, Jorge’s family always faced financial insecurity, but everything got worse when Jorge’s twin sister was diagnosed with a neck tumor.

Jorge's father, Luis, was desperate to save his daughter and sold everything he owned, including their home and even the washing machine, to pay for her treatment, unfortunately, that wasn't enough, so he had to ask for loans and get in debt.

But despite all of these efforts, it was not enough… And tragically, she passed away in November at just 10 years old. 

Breaking Point

How Financial Stress Can Destroy a Family

The financial stress of the situation weighed heavily on Luis and his family. 

Every day was filled with the pressing questions of "Where are we going to sleep tonight?" and "Are we going to eat today?" 

Luis was forced to beg for food and shelter, and the constant struggle took a toll on him.

Jorge felt the impact of the situation firsthand. He knew his father couldn't afford even an ice cream and he didn't dare ask for anything because he knew his father would react with anger.

As the stress and struggle mounted, Luis and his wife's marriage fell apart, and they split up.

The Nightmare 

Abandonment and Bullying

At this moment, Jorge's mother abandoned him, never to be seen or heard from again.

One day Jorge got home and asked his father for a gift that the school asked him to bring, without knowing what it was. Luis gave it to him, and when Jorge arrived at school, he saw every kid had one too, but they had something he didn’t, their mom...

It was Mother's Day, and they were giving gifts to their moms. Because he didn’t have his mom, he was bullied by the other kids.

It was the final straw, Luis took Jorge out of school after seeing his son arriving at home crying and not wanting to go to school the next day. 

Despair 
A Moment That Changed Everything

Things had gotten so bad that, at one point, Luis felt he could no longer bear it. Out of despair, he saw no other escape but to end his own life. 

He carefully planned the whole thing, finding the perfect spot in his own house and going out to buy a rope with this sole purpose in mind. When he finally had the rope in his hands, he felt something he never felt before…  Finally, everything would be solved once and for all.

But when he arrived home, he saw his son drawing in the exact same spot he chose to hang himself. Overwhelmed by emotion, Luis simply hugged Jorge and cried. 

Without knowing, this 9-year-old kid saved his father’s life by being at the right place, at the right moment.

Unwavering Love

The Inspiring Story of One Man's Dedication to His Son

This event was a turning point for Luis. He knew he needed to make drastic changes for his son's sake. He took a job in Colombia, leaving Jorge with his grandmother, promising to pick him up in 30 days. Communication was difficult due to the isolated village they were living in. 

Once the 30 days passed by, Luis didn't have enough money to get Jorge, he felt terrible for not being able to respect the promise he made to his son. The wait was longer than expected, and Jorge lost hope. 

Jorge was left feeling abandoned yet again

One of the rare days Luis had a chance to talk with Jorge, he realized Jorge hadn't eaten anything that day yet (it was 5 PM). 

He realized he couldn't wait anymore and borrowed money to be able to pick up his son that was not being treated properly. 

Luis traveled to the border of Venezuela and Colombia, where his sister was waiting for him with Jorge. When Luis arrived and saw his son, he felt his heart full of love and joy again.

The long 5-month wait was finally over... 

The family was finally reunited. The depth of the emotion was strong. But something was disturbing Luis, he saw fear in his son's eyes… 

He realized Jorge was scared of being abandoned again and didn't want to see angry reactions from his father like it used to happen in the past. 

Luis explained that he changed and promised to be a living example. Words were not enough, Luis needed to prove to his son his devotion and commitment.

So he started to play more with Jorge, open up his heart, and talk more about his emotions and what happened in the past. But even though Jorge couldn’t open up, and couldn’t talk at all about that period and his feelings. 

Luis never gave up on giving the love that is needed for his son to start feeling safe and Jorge finally started to open up more and smile again.

Escaping the Nightmare 

The Dream of a Better Life on the other side of the Atlantic

Luis knows that staying in their current environment is not the best place for his son to grow up because they don't have a guaranteed place to sleep every night, and the streets are full of kids and adults taking drugs and alcohol. 

Luis doesn’t want his son to be in this environment that can destroy his life & future.

He is devoted to having a better environment than the one he grew up in and wants to be able to give him a new life to prevent him to end up like all those kids & adults. 

Luis's dream is to move to Valencia in Spain at the beginning of 2024 so that Jorge can have a healthy environment to grow up in and learn English. 

The Struggle to Start Over

The Sacrifice of Immigrating to a New Country

But as immigrants, the process is complicated, and Luis only makes $200 per month which most of it goes to food & basic needs… 

If they keep saving $10 or $20 every month this dream might be far from reality, especially if anything comes up that affects Jorge's health since he has epilepsy and diabetes… 

They really need our help to make that a reality, and we have the goal to move them to Valencia earlier so Jorge can spend his next birthday, on the 25th of September, in his new home & with his new friends already.  

To make that a reality we need your help to raise funds so that this family can start a new life and have a better future. 

The symbolic donation of $5 for the 5 months they were separated from each other will give hope to a kid & father that have been through so much already...
