Sierra Leone has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world. Every day, mothers and babies lose their lives to causes that are entirely preventable. These are not statistics — they are daughters, sisters, newborns who never get the chance to grow up.
Better Lives Foundation exists to change this reality. So far, we have treated 16,771 women and 1,744 malnourished infants, providing high-quality, free healthcare to communities who would otherwise have none. We reach the most isolated villages, ensuring that even those forgotten by the system can access lifesaving care.
Globally, between 250,000 and 343,000 women and infants die each year from complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. When a mother dies, her child is 3 to 10 times more likely to die before the age of two. In Sierra Leone, where midwives are desperately scarce and healthcare access is limited, this cycle of loss is devastating.
There are only 500 midwives serving just 15% of the population. Many women give birth without skilled support, without medication, without equipment, and without any mental health care. Too often, childbirth becomes a matter of survival instead of celebration.
Our solution is hope in action.
Better Lives Foundation provides:
Pre- and post-natal care for mothers
Safe deliveries with highly trained staff
Clean, hygienic environments
Access to essential medicines and equipment
We run weekly malnutrition clinics, send nurses and social workers into villages, identify children at risk, and bring them to safety. We vaccinate children under five, monitor their growth, and support families who have nowhere else to turn.
We also invest in the future — sponsoring students to become qualified midwives, creating jobs, and empowering women to save the lives of other women.
- Every life saved is a story rewritten.
- Every mother who survives gets to hold her child.
- Every baby nourished gets a chance to grow.
This is not charity.
This is dignity, survival, and the right to live.
