SAFE HOUSE FOR UGANDAN TRANS ASYLUM SEEKERS

    URGENT APPEAL FOR DONORS

HELP US ESTABLISH SAFE HOUSES FOR TRANSGENDER INDIVIDUALS
    IN UGANDA

Since May 2023, Uganda's government has enacted one of the world's harshest anti-LGBTQIA+ laws, placing the safety of LGBTQIA+ individuals in severe jeopardy. Persecution and harsh penalties are now legalized, including life imprisonment and the death penalty for specific cases.

    Key Provisions of the Law:

    • Expanded Criminalization: Criminalizes various same-sex activities, including "promoting" or "recruiting" into LGBTQ+ lifestyles.

    • Severe Penalties: Imposes life imprisonment for certain offenses and the death penalty for "aggravated" homosexuality, including repeat offenses or cases involving minors.

    • Mandatory Reporting: Requires citizens, including family members and healthcare providers, to report suspected homosexual activities, creating a climate of fear and surveillance.

    • Targeting Support Networks: Criminalizes organizations and individuals supporting LGBTQ+ rights, leading to potential shutdowns.

    • Educational Restrictions: Bans teaching or promoting LGBTQ+ issues, further marginalizing the community.

    • International Limitations: Restricts foreign humanitarian and human rights interventions supporting LGBTQ+ causes.

    Impact on the Community:

LGBTQIA+ individuals face eviction, homelessness, and the constant threat of violence. Transgender individuals are particularly vulnerable due to difficulties passing as their assigned birth gender.

TRANS ASYLIAS has received 20 urgent requests for help since the law’s passage. Relocating individuals to safer transit countries—or ultimately to nations granting asylum—is difficult. As an immediate solution, we aim to establish Safe Houses in Uganda.

    Our Plan:

We are preparing to open the first Safe House and need your support. Each facility will provide a secure environment for transgender individuals and be managed under TRANS ASYLIAS' supervision.

    Why Monthly Donations Matter:

Your recurring contribution ensures sustained support and the expansion of our initiative. We plan to open 4 Safe Houses to accommodate the 20 transgender siblings currently under our care and future beneficiaries.

    Preliminary Budget Breakdown:

    Pre-Move Support (for 5 individuals, 2 months):

    • Living Expenses: $3,000

    • Transportation/Other Costs: $1,000
