The Deep Medicine Circle is operating the largest rooftop farm on the West Coast--Rooftop Medicine Farm--located in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, California on occupied, unceded Ohlone territory of Huichin.
The organic food we grow on this 1-acre rooftop farm is donated to UCSF's Pediatric clinic next door where their Food Pharmacy offers a box of fresh produce to every family who comes for a visit. It also goes to Poor Magazine's radical redistribution network in Deep East Oakland--the Sliding Scale Cafe, to Moms 4 Housing for distribution in West Oakland, People's Programs and to Wahpepah's Kitchen to support the restaurant providing food to elders in need it at no cost.
This rooftop farm is also the site of training doctors, activists and farmers in the connections between food, soil, direct action and health. The greenhouse will allow us to start seeds safely and keep the space in year-round production of nutritious fruits and vegetables.
Your donation will cover the cost of cold frames on the rooftop to start our seeds directly up there. We were unable to negotiate the build out of the greenhouse we hoped to install with the building management. This option is less intense, more portable and easy to install and use for our purposes of maximizing food production
We believe that nutritious food is a right and that farmers our frontline health workers. Thank you for helping us build a food system that simultaneously meets climate, racial and health justice goals.
