Goal
I'm fundraising $1,000 for the Trans Journalists Association's 5-year anniversary campaign.
Thanks to $2,700 of challenge pledges from our community, your $5 donation means that the TJA will see $10 of support.
Why the TJA?
I've supported the Trans Journalists Association since its early days, when I copyedited the first round of its styleguide.
Since we launched in 2020, I've watched the change that we've been able to bring to the industry. Our work leveraged change across the entire news ecosystem. Instead of fighting tiny, individual battles with one unmoving newsroom, it prompted systemwide change. We've provided resources and community for more than 900 journalists. Dozens of newsrooms have adopted our style guides. We've reached thousands of journalists, in the U.S. and internationally, with trainings and panels on best practices just in the last few years. Recently, we've hired our first full-time staff member.
This organization — and what we've been able to do through it — is what has kept me in journalism and given me hope that the industry can be better, for trans journalists and for the news that affects our communities. TJA showed me a new way to challenge the industry to better-serve the public, backed by a community of trans journalists dedicated to supporting each other in all the ways that the industry has not.
For all those reasons, please consider supporting our work!
Here’s how your donation — no matter the amount — can help:
- $25 aids timely coverage advice that informs the whole journalism industry about best practices for covering trans communities and the news that affects us.
- $50 keeps our annual memberships free for trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive journalists and students.
- $100 supports the expansion of our Stylebook and Coverage Guide, a tool for journalists to improve news coverage of trans communities, and our Workplace & Holistic Safety Guide, a tool that helps newsroom leaders and allies support trans workers.
- $250 helps us provide low-cost and free training to newsrooms, TJA members, and community groups.
- $500 fully covers a professional development stipend for a journalist.
