Hi y’all!

As you know, we are in the middle of unprecedented attacks on trans rights the world over. Much of this has been fueled by media misrepresentation and an ecosystem of disinformation. 

Five years ago, the Trans Journalists Association launched to promote nuanced, accurate coverage of trans rights and communities in the media. They sought to nurture the careers of gender-expansive journalists, who were not centered in other professional associations. 

As a journalist, the resources TJA provides are invaluable. Their Style Guide is a wonderful, up-to-date reference I confer to make sure my language is representative of the trans community. The editors are responsive and incorporate suggestions for additional entries or clarification. When President Trump issued anti-transgender executive orders as soon as he resumed office, I turned to TJA’s timely guidance for best practices on framing stories about these consequential, thorny legal mandates. 

When TJA transitioned to a membership-based organization two years ago, I immediately signed up to support them monetarily. I also volunteer as a part of their flagship mentorship program, reserving time on my calendar to support other members navigate data reporting and disability accommodations in the newsroom. 

TJA is a necessary part of our media ecosystem. They offer training to newsrooms on how to structure inclusive coverage. They focus on providing rigorous, free, fact-based resources to anyone working in media. And they are wholly centered on supporting trans journalists who are often dismissed or discriminated against because of their identities. 

Please help me raise $500 for the Trans Journalist Association before their campaign ends June 30, the organization’s five-year anniversary. TJA has been run by dedicated volunteers for much of its life, and recently has transitioned to a more sustainable structure that can compensate the labor of the trans journalists who steward this necessary resource. 

I’m donating $50 for this campaign, in addition to the annual dues I voluntarily pay as an allied member and the time I donate for the mentorship program. Can nine people match me? Or can 18 people pitch in $25?
