Assessing the Devastating Impact: Tigray's Education Sector in Crisis

The education system in Tigray has faced a series of devastating setbacks, starting with the closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing due to the destructive impact of the war. This ongoing conflict has caused extensive damage, destruction, loss, and long-lasting negative effects on the education sector.

As a result of the war, not only was the continuity of instruction disrupted, leading to significant learning setbacks and an alarming gap in educational time, but school buildings have also been deliberately targeted and destroyed. Furthermore, numerous schools are currently being used as shelters by internally displaced people, while 552 schools remain inaccessible due to occupation by Amhara and Eritrean military forces, despite agreements for their withdrawal. The presence of unexploded ordnances around these schools poses a grave safety threat to students, teachers, and community members.

Damage of classrooms per zone

Moreover, the region has suffered a loss of teachers due to displacement and casualties caused by the conflict. Unpaid salaries have driven many educators to seek alternative employment. The educational infrastructure, encompassing classrooms, electronic devices, laboratory equipment, and teaching aids, has been either destroyed or looted. Rebuilding and reconstructing schools is an urgent necessity, requiring substantial resources, such as desks, blackboards, computers, printers, special needs materials, books, and more.

The Tigrayan school community is grappling with the trauma of witnessing violence at a young age. Studies have revealed significant learning loss and psychological trauma among students, parents, and teachers. Reopening schools demands addressing this trauma and ensuring safety and support for students and educators. The number of students and teachers with special needs has risen due to the war, while severe famine and famine-like conditions affect 90% of the population, exacerbated by a halt in humanitarian assistance.
