Dear friends,
As Cardinal News enters its fifth year, we have seen over and over again a hunger in our communities for independent, enterprising and fact-based local news. We also have shown that delivering that news, while challenging, is financially viable through the generosity of our supporters. Our team has grown exponentially – from two reporters in 2021 to a dozen today, with more on the way – to meet news demands with plans to deepen and expand our coverage.
As a long-time, now retired editor at The News & Advance, and a member of Cardinal’s Board of Directors since 2021, I am delighted to say part of that news plan centers on the Hill City. Emma Malinak joined Cardinal News a year ago as a Report for America corps member. Emma lives and works in Lynchburg; she provides nuanced and human-centered news coverage for the region she calls home.
Reader support is vital to Cardinal's mission as a nonprofit news organization. Each reporter added to the Cardinal team costs $100,000 a year. Report for America supplements part of the reporter's salary for three years, providing less support each year. That means we need our friends and supporters in the Lynchburg area who believe in our mission to assist us.
Help create a stronger Lynchburg – support Emma's work with Cardinal News.
Please consider a meaningful financial gift now. Cardinal Club members give monthly or annually and get great perks like exclusive access to reporters, free passes to area venues/events and more. We'd like to help Cardinal News acquire at least 30 new members before July 31. One-time gifts in any amount are also welcome, and here’s a great incentive: A generous local reader will match all donations up to $5,000. That means your impact will be doubled.
If you prefer to make your gift another way — such as through an IRA, donor-advised funds or a transfer of appreciated stock — just reach out to Sarah Stevenson, chief revenue officer, at sarah@cardinalnews.org for details. You can also mail a check to P.O. Box 4455, Roanoke, Va. 24015.
Your support for local news in Lynchburg is much needed.
Thanks.
