Five-year-old Marina lost her leg as a result of enemy shelling. The shell hit the room where the girl and her family were hiding. Her story was told at the Okhmatdyt hospital.

Marina wanted to become a racer, but the mortar shelling on April 2 destroyed not only her home, but also her big dream. Her family describes her as a real "toddler" who always played soccer with the boys and rode a scooter.

Her hometown in the Kherson region was occupied by the Russians. A fierce fighting was going on around their house, so no one even went outside the gate.

The house had no basement, so the family took refuge in the central room. It seemed the most protected, but a shell came through the roof. There were 8 people in the room, but it was Marina and her mother who suffered the most. The girl's legs were torn off, and the woman had numerous shrapnel wounds to her lower limbs.

" The grandfather was able to pull his granddaughter out of the rubble. Fortunately, the Russians did not take the family's car, as they did from their neighbors. So the injured family tried to get to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible.

The hospital in their town was bombed, so they had to drive 40 kilometers from home. The shelling did not stop all the time. Marina lost consciousness several times. At the checkpoints, they also tried to shoot the car, but the family was lucky ," the hospital "Okhmatdyt" said.

Ukrainian military medics administered an anesthetic and applied a hemostatic tourniquet to the girl. They called an armored ambulance and took the patient to a hospital in Kryvyi Rih.

The mother and child were separated because the girl was sent to a children's hospital. Doctors had to amputate Marina's leg above the knee. However, this saved the child's life. She spent a long time in intensive care.

When the girl regained consciousness, her first question was: " Do you know that I no longer have a leg? " She also asked herself many times why she and why the shell had hit their house. " When bandaging, Marina closes her eyes - not because of pain, she just doesn't want to see her leg ," the doctors say. Mother and daughter haven't seen each other for over 3 weeks. Now they are finally reunited.
