Help refugees into employment and education by donating the cost of a laptop battery
Have you ever tried to get a job without access to the internet? Think you could apply to university without a laptop?
It’s difficult to do either, and it’s even more difficult if you are learning English and have had recent experiences of displacement. At Screen Share, we are dedicated to providing good quality, refurbished laptops to refugees across the UK. Join us in our mission today.
Support Screen Share this festive season!
Hundreds of refugees in the UK do not have access to the right technology. This means they can’t progress with their education, find or apply for work work, consult with their lawyers, access crucial psychosocial support, or learn simple things about how to progress their life in the UK. In some cases, this lack of access also means refugees can’t communicate with their family back home. On a human level, it stops them doing the everyday things we all do: watching films, consuming news, scrolling social media to keep up with friends.
In each of these situations, each person has a different story, different experiences, different hopes and different dreams. Digital exclusion affects each person differently depending on their circumstances.
This is why we’re asking you to empower refugees in the UK by helping us provide good quality laptops and devices, free of charge and as a permanent gift.
By donating £30, you can put a brand new battery in a laptop which Screen Share has recycled. A new battery makes used laptops usable, and ensures it can live a good length of life with its new recipient.
For £60, you cover the cost of a full refurbishment, turning an old and slow laptop which doesn’t charge properly, into a laptop which feels as good as new.
This hardware is not expensive but it makes a huge difference. Just as you wouldn’t gift a friend something that you don’t expect to last long, we hope to give our recipients laptops that can support them into the future. Our message is that refugees are not only welcome here, but that we believe in them, no strings attached.
Every pound you give supports our efforts to find, recycle, refurbish, and redistribute this tech to refugees who need it. This simple act of giving helps - in a small way - to challenge and reset power dynamics in our communities. Those seeking asylum in the UK are subjected both to governmental system which disbelieves them, and to media coverage which dehumanises and vilinises them. At Screen Share, we challenge this by listening to communities and asking what they need: giving them the technology they require to participate fully in society.
Don't take our word for it - hear from our recipients:
“I would like to let you know that I received a good laptop brand Dell from Screen Share UK. I’m so glad because of that it helped me a lot especially I start my first IT class today and it allow me to look and apply for jobs, attend the session and browse the net. It’s so useful and gave me a big push to enhance my situation at all levels. I really can’t express my deepest gratitude to your organisation for everything you have done for me and my little son.
