Join NICJR in the fight to advance justice. Contribute to our 2020 Holiday Campaign!
Launched in Oakland in April 2020, through partnerships with local community based organizations, the Oakland City Council and the Oakland Police Department, the Neighborhood Opportunity and Accountability Board (NOAB) Initiative diverts youth arrested for non-violent felonies, immediately at the point of arrest, into a community-driven process that connects youth and their families to intensive supports.
Instead of entering the court system, youth appear before the NOAB, a group of local community leaders, business owners, formerly incarcerated residents, and crime victims. Through these conferences, the NOAB develops a life plan with input from the youth and their family, addressing key areas for support. The NOAB Coordinator then connects the youth and family to relevant resources and provides continuous support.
How it Works
Since April, the Oakland NOAB has served nearly 30 youth between the ages of 13 and 17 years old. Through the program, these youth have avoided involvement in the juvenile justice system and are now connected to services to address their pain and trauma. All remain engaged with the program and none have been re-arrested. Read more about NOAB here.
To build on this success, we are asking our supporters to contribute to our year end campaign by giving $25, $50, $100 or more towards our goal of raising $10,000 for the NOAB Initiative. These funds will go directly towards deepening our impact in Oakland and building a successful model that can be replicated in other cities to transform policing and juvenile justice.
Thank you for your support!
