In the realm of MoonFall, the Sun, Moon, Magician, and Citizens clash over the imbalance of the Earth. Where do you stand?
MoonFall is a new immersive and interactive mythic fantasy ballet that explores desire, climate change, community, and our relationship with the cosmos. At times poignant and at others delightful, MoonFall tells a story of the Sun and Moon’s dualistic orbit and the humans whose movements push and pull on their natural world. MoonFall is the brainchild of international dancer, choreographer, and producer Dorothy O’Shea Overbey and award-winning cinematic composer Sam Lipman. This innovative new theatrical experience is presented by two Austin arts organizations - Density512 and Red Nightfall Dance Theatre - and features 12 local Austin professional dancers and a live chamber orchestra of 13 Austin musicians.
MoonFall bridges classical and contemporary styles and blurs the barrier between audiences and performers. Guests are invited to step into a fantasy world where they will fall in love with dramatic characters, powerful choreography, and a captivating soundtrack, with opportunities to influence elements of the performance and participate in the unfolding of the story! Act 2 will feature three synchronous scenes, each taking place in a separate space. We invite you to choose your own path to experience these spaces, perhaps even following your favorite character from room to room.
This is a show for dance and classical music buffs, theatre-lovers, readers and players of fantasy, and world citizens of all ages! Guests are invited to attend in fantasy attire if inspired, and step into the realm of MoonFall half an hour before the show begins to experience optional activities that will influence the ballet. Try becoming a Builder’s apprentice, cast a spell with some friends, or prepare for your journey at the Adventurer’s Shop and Tavern! At key points in the story, the cast will need the audience’s help to move the story forward.
As a chamber orchestra and new music collective, Density512 has given more than 30 world premiere music performances and reached over 100,000 people through digital, radio, and television performances. Red Nightfall Dance Theatre, specializing in crafting immersive experiences through film and dance/theater performance, has engaged over 300 University of Texas students in performance and collaboration, and employed more than 200 professional performing artists, designers, and collaborators since 2017.
Since 2017, our organizations have collectively reached over 14,000 audience members across Texas. We are committed to creating new work that defies conventional categorization and building inclusive community and partnerships through music, dance, and collaborative storytelling. Your partnership helps make Austin a place where small arts organizations and innovative new collaborations can thrive.
MoonFall shows will run May 10-11th, and May 16-18th, 2024, at the central East Austin location of the innovative performance space, dadaLab. With a focus on light and sound installations, dadaLab constantly pushes the boundaries of immersive design, blending art with science and technology.
Thanks to the generous support of our communities we've already secured over $35,000, allowing us to commission the original score, and secure fair payment for all MoonFall dancers. Over the next few months we must raise enough to pay our 13-piece chamber orchestra as well and cover the rest of our production expenses. Funds raised for MoonFall will go to commission the work (30%); dancers, musicians, and other artists (35%); production expenses (20%); venue (10%); and administrative support (5%).
