Maya’s Hope: Complex orthopedic surgery for Nadiia with cerebral palsy
In Ukrainian, the name Nadiia means Hope. And for one brave 7-year-old girl from Ukraine, hope means something many of us take for granted – the chance to stand, walk, and take steps toward a more independent future.
Nadiia was born prematurely and diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She lives with a severe form of the condition called spastic tetraparesis, which affects movement in both her arms and legs. Over time, severe muscle tightness has caused painful joint deformities, a dislocated left hip, and a partially dislocated right hip.
Today, Nadiia cannot walk independently. But doctors believe she has the potential to walk with support if she receives the surgery she urgently needs.

Nadiia's father, Oleksandr, is raising his two young daughters, 7-year-old Nadiia and 5-year-old Valeriia, entirely on his own. Both girls were born prematurely, and both have cerebral palsy. Their mother left the family when Valeriia was not yet one year old. Since then, Oleksandr has devoted his life to caring for his daughters, managing their medical needs, and giving them every opportunity for a better future.

Nadiia urgently needs complex orthopedic surgery to correct the severe deformities in her hips and legs. The procedure involves a derotational varus osteotomy of the proximal femur with plate fixation, along with a pelvic osteotomy. In simpler terms, surgeons will carefully reposition and stabilize the bones in her hip and upper leg to improve alignment and give her body a better chance at movement. Her treatment will be performed in stages on both legs. The road to recovery will be long, but Nadiia's doctors believe she has meaningful rehabilitation potential.

With surgery and rehabilitation, Nadiia may regain important physical functions and gain the ability to walk with support. Without treatment, her condition is expected to worsen, putting her future mobility at even greater risk.
For a father who has dedicated everything to his daughters, the cost of this surgery is simply beyond what he can afford alone. But together, we can help give Nadiia a chance.
Her name means Hope. And today, you can be part of hers. 💛💙
