Veronika was born in Ukraine in 2015. Her mother was brought to the emergency room at 35 weeks pregnant. Doctors determined that Veronika had birth asphyxia, necessitating an emergency C-section. Immediately after birth, she was rushed to the NICU with hemolytic disease of the newborn and a high level of bilirubin (28 mg/dL). After various treatments, including a blood transfusion, her condition improved. However, the damage to her brain was severe.
Veronika has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and speech delay, making it difficult for her to move and communicate like other children her age. She cannot sit or stand on her own. Yet, thanks to extensive therapy, she learned to speak at the age of six. Although she has certain learning difficulties and cognitive impairments, she does not have an intellectual disability and is fully capable of learning. With the right treatment and support, Veronika can achieve her full potential.
Veronika has an older sister and a devoted mother who takes care of them. Since the spring of 2022, their father has been protecting their homeland.
