Andriy is a bright 13-year-old boy living in central Ukraine with multiple complex medical conditions. He has autism, which affects how he communicates and experiences the world. He also lives with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome—a rare genetic disorder that makes his joints overly flexible and his skin fragile and slow to heal. On top of this, he faces hemorrhagic vasculitis, causing inflammation in his blood vessels that can lead to painful rashes and internal complications, and mitochondrial disease, which affects his body’s ability to produce energy and leaves him easily fatigued.
These conditions require constant medical care, therapies, and special attention. His mother, Olga, is a devoted single parent who cannot work due to the full-time demands of caregiving. They live modestly, relying on state aid that barely meets their monthly needs.
