Children in the Philippines who live in extreme poverty lack access to quality healthcare. They are often denied assistance and are unable to afford necessities to improve their quality of life.
Sweet little John is a two-and-a-half-year-old boy suffering from several congenital birth defects including Cerebral Palsy, Hydrocephalus, which is a condition where there is excess fluid in the brain causing pressure and brain damage, Porencephalic Cysts in the brain which also puts pressure on the brain, Hearing and Vision impairment, and Global Developmental Delays. His mom says that he can’t sit or walk and has the motor skills of a 4-month-old. John gets sick frequently with coughs, colds, and fevers, and must go to the doctor for treatment. He was prescribed a nebulizer to help with his breathing, but the medicine used in it is too expensive for the family to buy regularly. John lives with his parents and 2 older siblings in a squatter area in a very small apartment. John’s father is uneducated and drives a tricycle that takes passengers' places. His monthly income at most is about $170 US Dollars but is usually less because of the pandemic restrictions. John’s mother is also uneducated and can’t work because John needs constant care. The family was forced to borrow money to pay rent, electric and water bills but still owe money for each of them and now for the loan too. They sometimes have to make an agonizing choice between buying food or the urgent maintenance medicine that John needs. John’s parents also can’t afford to get him the physical therapy he’s been prescribed making his development even more delayed.
