Children in the Philippines who live in extreme poverty lack access to quality healthcare. They are often denied assistance and are unable to afford necessities to improve their quality of life.
Jade is one year old and has Hydrocephalus and Meningocele. Her mother is a stay-at-home wife who takes care of Jade. Her father is a tricycle driver whose job was impacted by the pandemic. The frequent lockdowns caused people to stay at home, thus no trips and no income for Jade’s family. When Jade was sick with cough and cold, the family had to open their eldest child’s piggy bank just so they could buy the antibiotics needed for Jade. Her parents are unable to supply Jade’s basic needs and have to stretch whatever income the father has to fit their expenses. Last yearr, she needed emergency surgery for a shunt to relieve the pressure in her head caused by hydrocephalus. Her parents are unable to afford it but through the generosity of the sponsors of Maya’s hope, she was able to successfully complete surgery.
Their family is still struggling to provide for her basic needs as the situation in the Philippines has not exactly improved.
