Maya's Hope: Emergency Surgery for 5 month old

Children in the Philippines who live in extreme poverty lack access to quality healthcare. They are often denied assistance and are unable to afford necessities to improve their quality of life.

Charvia is a 5-month-old baby girl with Spina Bifida. She lives in a one-room cinder block house in the Philippines with her mother and grandmother, her brother, and aunts. There is no work to be found where they live, so Charvia’s father lives with his parents and sends money for Charvia’s milk.

Little Charvia also has the diagnosis of a dermal sinus tract. Dermal sinuses are a congenital malformation, consisting of a channel of tissue found along the body’s midline and often located at the lumbosacral region. She also has an extremely large birthmark across her back which needs assessment.

Charvia’s dermal sinus tract urgently needs to be excised, in order to reduce the risk of infection and abscess. Once infection occurs, which it often does before the age of 5, there are risks to the central nervous system and brain.

Charvia’s mother explained that while she was seeking work in Manila, a television network offered to help pay for the operation of her daughter. She received 5000 PHP ($97 USD) to help with her transportation home to get her daughter for the surgery. However, unexpectedly, the fieldworker stopped responding. Charvia’s mother was unable to receive a guarantee letter for the surgery. Charvia’s mother never stopped calling the fieldworkers for help, but there was never an answer. She was unable to make contact with the people who previously said they would help her. Despite many attempts to contact both the medical center and television network, including attempts made by Maya’s hope, no progress could be made.

Charvia’s doctors said that urgently needed the operation because as she grows, the sacral mass is also getting larger and causing more nerve damage. Therefore Maya’s Hope has decided to move forward to fund the surgery, to ensure that Charvia can survive and thrive.
Charvia’s Mother shared this with us:

"Because of pandemic and after giving birth to my daughter my live-in partner seldom sell in market because he's taking care of me and my daughter. Then we lost our capital because we pay it to the hospital. He still sell so he can provide milk for my baby and my mother works hard so she can provide food for us"

Can you help baby Charvia?
