Children in the Philippines who live in extreme poverty lack access to quality healthcare. They are often denied assistance and are unable to afford necessities to improve their quality of life.
Jania was born with hydrocephalus. Congenital hydrocephalus is a buildup of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain at birth. The extra fluid can increase pressure in the baby’s brain, causing permanent brain damage and mental and physical problems.
Last year, Maya’s Hope funded a shunt surgery for Jania. A shunt carries fluid to another part of the body (usually the belly, or the heart, which then absorbs the fluid.)
Tragically, Jania’s father abandoned her. He left Jania’s mother during the time when Jania was in hospital having her surgery. He is a street vendor and Jania’s mother sells vegetables. They have 4 children, 3 of whom are young students, and Jania.
The expectation after the surgery was that Jania’s head circumference would grow smaller. Instead, although the wound was healing, her head was getting bigger.
The doctor has advised that there was a problem with the shunt, and it urgently needs to be replaced.
Jania started having seizures on December 30th.
Her eyes are also being affected by the pressure and build-up of fluid.
Jania’s Mother shared this with us:
“i realy want jania to be healthy and be with me for a long time, thanks to all the comitee and field workers of Maya's Hope Foundation - thanks to all of u Jania's Hope is Maya's Hope ”
Can you help baby Jania?
