We are Mark’s parents, an 8-year-old boy, and our lives changed forever: Mark was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.
Everything happened so quickly, and now we are on a completely new journey, full of fear and hope, trying to understand what comes next for our son. Mark is being treated at MD Anderson, where the doctors are doing everything possible to give him the best chance at life.
Even though we have health insurance, most of the treatment costs are not covered. Some procedures and tests are considered out-of-network, and the clinical trial Mark is participating in only covers the experimental medication and research tests—not the surgery, hospitalization, or radiation therapy.
Even though the fight has just begun, the bills are already piling up, and our family is facing very high medical expenses—estimated at around $240,000 just for his treatments. On top of that, we have housing, transportation, and daily living costs as we stay close to Mark for his care.
