Goal
In 2016, when I ran for election to the Stockton Unified School District Board for the first time, I asked two amazing Stockton student leaders - Princess and Jorge - to join me at the Registrar of Voters to file my papers. This month, they joined me again (albeit socially distanced) -- and I'm excited to announce that I've qualified for the election and will be on the ballot for Stockton USD School Board on November 3rd.
In my time serving this community, we have made significant progress to ensure that Stockton kids get the resources they deserve. Together, we used our local funding to hire 40 new counselors in elementary and high school (cutting our student to counselor ratio in half), 30 mental health clinicians, and 22 K-8 music teachers. We launched Student Recovery Day, grew our ethnic studies programming, and rolled out a new teacher-chosen, standards-aligned ELA and math curriculum. Most importantly, Stockton USD became the first district in our county to set the policy that all students will graduate college, career, and community ready -- and as long as they do everything that is expected of them, students will earn a scholarship to help pay for higher education. As a result more students are reading at grade level, fewer kids are being suspended or expelled, and (significantly!) more students are going to college with financial aid support.
There is so much more work to do. Especially in the face of COVID-19, we need to maintain these investments in supportive services for students, families, and staff. This is why I'm running for re-election and humbly ask for your support.
