#LoveNotMuskets
Elder Holland's recent remarks calling for metaphorical "musket fire" to be aimed at queer students, alumni, and allies have once again painted a target on the backs of some of the most vulnerable students at BYU. The OUT Foundation wholeheartedly rejects these remarks, and we instead call for #LoveNotMuskets - showing LOVE and SAFETY to our queer brothers and sisters on campus.
LOVE - Help us show queer students the love and support they so desperately need by providing them queer-affirming therapy.
Since January of 2020, The OUT Foundation has partnered with Flourish Therapy Inc. to provide free, queer-affirming therapy to LGBTQ+ BYU students. This service helps queer BYU students get the help, support, and love they need to continue being their true, authentic selves. As of April 2021, we've provided:
Access to therapy for 23 queer BYU students
A total of 292 sessions
An estimated cost of $16,000
Students have paid zero out of pocket
One session of queer-affirming therapy for an LGBTQ+ student at BYU costs $55.
SAFETY - Help us provide safety and security for queer BYU students being targeted for their sexuality by providing them means to transfer universities.
In 2020, The OUT Foundation awarded $10,000 to help 12 queer students transfer out of BYU. Here's an excerpt from one of our 2019 transfer fund recipients:
"Once I made the decision to transfer and I finally paid my last bill to BYU I cannot describe the freedom I felt. I came out fully to my friends and family, and I actually started to see a future for myself that would be worth it...I feel free to make real friends who don't think twice about my sexuality, free to have real relationships with people I am genuinely attracted to, and free to find real happiness in my life each and everyday without being ashamed of who I am."
The OUT Foundation's staff is completely volunteer-based, which means every single dollar of your donations goes towards helping queer students at BYU. All donations will go towards our general operating fund to be used for therapy, transfers, scholarships, housing, etc. The majority of our funds come from small, consistent monthly donations. Please consider becoming a monthly donor.
