Long Island Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Inc. was formed by a group of friends, all volunteer licensed wildlife rehabilitators, who saw a need for centralized and easy-to-access care for the wildlife of Long Island when they become sick, injured or orphaned. We are proud and excited to announce that we have now achieved 501c3 status.
Our goal is to establish a 24/7 wildlife rehabilitation facility to serve all of Nassau County and western Suffolk. In doing this, there will be a single phone number to call for assistance and a single drop off location, with no appointment necessary, thus simplifying the process for finders of obtaining care for the animals found, as well as reducing the time before lifesaving care is initiated.
Immediately upon opening, we will provide care to all small mammals other than rabies vector species, reptiles, and non-migratory birds. We have members qualified to care for rabies vector species and migratory birds and plan to obtain these permits within the first few months of opening, as there are no services available at all for these animals, anywhere in Nassau County.
We also plan to provide classes, training and mentorship for for those new to or interested in becoming involved with wildlife rescue and rehabilitation as well as community support and education and volunteer/community service opportunities for high school and college students.
Our goal is to raise funds for the purchase of a property in Nassau County near a park or preserve as well as for the ongoing care of the ill, injured and orphaned wildlife we are serving.
